6.1. Using MIDI and OMS

Before to use MIDI it is preferable to disable AppleTalk and system extensions that make use of the modem or printer port.

Generally, it is preferable to set MIDI handshaking on to be sure that samples are transmitted and received in the right way.

For MIDI I/O, D-SoundPRO needs OMS 1.2 or better. By OMS, D-SoundPRO can transmit/receive MIDI through interface using multiple input/output routings.

In all cases you must avoid MIDI thru at mac interface or message feedback around your MIDI network.

OMS is available at Opcode web or ftp site (www.opcode.com). For the use of OMS and your MIDI Interface routing, refer to relevant User Manuals.

I tested D-SoundPRO using OMS 2.1 and a Studio 4 MIDI interface.

It is preferable to turn OFF the Apple Virtual Memory. It could cause problems during MIDI or SCSI sample dump. For MIDI communications, please disable also RAM Doubler, if present. D-SoundPRO's preferred size is 4000 K, but 2000 K are enough if you are not loading long stereo files. In this case D-SoundPRO runs also on Mac with 4 Mbytes of RAM memory.

Before to transmit/receive sounds from/to your Synth/sampler, check:

Using OMS, remind to select your sampler by popup menus near OMS In/Out (Midi Tx and Rx dialogs)

*** Tested Configurations ***

I'm developing and testing D-SoundPRO on:

YAMAHA SY99, TG500, TX16W, A3000

AKAI S2xxx, S3xxx, S1xxx (all midi and SCSI)

ROLAND S-760 (midi and SCSI), S-750, S-50, S-330, S-550

K-2000, K-2000r, K-2500 (midi and SCSI)

E-MU ESI-32, ESI-4000, E4k, E6400 (all midi and SCSI)

PowerMac 6100/66, 7600/132,

LC 475, LCII,

PowerBook 180, 5300cs.

Opcode Studio 4 MIDI interface & OMS 2.3.2.

6.2. Using D-SoundPRO and FreeMIDI

D-SoundPRO is compatible with FreeMIDI only if you are using FreeMIDI version 1.34 or newer.

FreeMIDI 1.34 is available at Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) web or ftp site (www.motu.com). For the use of FreeMIDI and its MIDI Interface routing, refer to relevant User Manuals.

6.3. SY99 Header support

This version of D-SoundPRO supports the SY99 sample headers in a preliminary implementation. Because is not clear which is the arithmetic relationship between sample frequency and pitch tune into the SY99 Header, only some sampling frequencies are supported: 15, 30, 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz.

But not all the tables for translation were debugged. So please check the correct setting of the sample tune after the transmission of the sample from the Mac to your sampler/synthesizer.

6.4. D-SoundPRO and SCSI sample dumps

*** About AKAI SCSI ***

I never had problems with Akai SCSI protocol. It is very fast and stable. Please let me know if you meet with problems in your configuration.

*** About Roland SCSI ***

The SCSI dump to/from Roland samplers requires a bi-directional MIDI connections.

If you are using an S-760, the last version of the OS is required (the current is the 2.24). You can find it at Roland Web site.

The SCSI dump works using only S-760 and DJ70 MkII samplers, not using previous Roland Samplers (S770, S750).

If you are going to send a sample to replace an existing one, it is better first to delete manually the one to replace, then to send the new one.

*** About SCSI I/O for E-MU, Kurzweil, SMDI samplers***

I found they are not identical, also if all they call it SMDI. I tested E-MU and Kurzweil samplers/synthesizers (both also using stereo files), but not what should be the SMDI. PLEASE, LET ME KNOWS ABOUT PEAVEY!

*** About SCSI I/O for YAMAHA A3000 sampler***

You must use the SMDI option. I tested it using a first release of the A3000 OS, and it seems to be quite slow. Please let me know if it is a known problem using also other software. I remind you to change the sampler SCSI ID to be numbering different from 0 or 7, already used by the Mac. Check also to avoid conflicts with other SCSI IDs of other devices in your SCSI chain...

6.5. Porting Sound Wave to/from Roland 3 1/2 diskette

D-SoundPRO is capable to import/export sound waves directly from/to Roland 3 1/2 diskette in S50, S330, S550 samplers format. The porting includes the samples, tone name, start and end loop points setting, loop mode, original MIDI key.

If the diskette contains a sub-tone with the same start and end points of an original tone, D-SoundPRO avoids to import it, because the samples are the same.
